Do you want to be involved in making the software of the future? As our world becomes ever more reliant on computers, the need for software developers becomes more pressing in key markets all around the world.
Think of all the apps and websites you use every day – from Spotify to Instagram, and Airbnb to Skyscanner – all of these have software developers behind them conceiving digital blue prints, creating new frameworks, and bug-fixing along the way.
If you’re a logical thinker and a problem solver looking for a route into the world of computing, then this course could be for you – even without development experience.
From September 2018 our MSc Professional Software Development programme will offer students (with no prior academic software development experience) the opportunity to branch into a new field. The only academic entry requirement for this one-year, full-time postgraduate degree is a 2.2 honours degree (or equivalent) in any discipline with no more than 50% computing content.
This is a conversion course designed for highly-motivated and ambitious students who wish to fast-track their learning of software development. Students will gain the essential analytical, design, programming, and management skills necessary to make it in this competitive industry.
Over the course of their study, students will master Java – a hugely influential programming language – and come to understand its application in real life contexts. Students will be able to specialise their field of focus and delve into mobile devices and applications, or database structures and data systems.
The course will be taught using a variety of lectures, seminars, directed tutorials, and practical sessions. Utilising a blended delivery method approach, students will discuss video materials shared with them a week in-advance in class.
The programme teaches students to hone their research, lateral-thinking, and problem-solving skills for a major individual computing project. This will involve the presentation of a computing solution to a realistic, real-world problem.
This exciting, fast-paced course will help to prepare students for roles as an analyst, engineer, consultant, designer, developer, and programmer across a broad range of sectors. Once students have completed the course, they will have a competitive edge in this rapidly-growing industry.
