Strongly regarded as the UK’s ‘Second City’, and officially the second largest by population, Birmingham has a diverse economy and is a major hub for manufacturing, business, retail, healthcare, and the arts.
Many large companies are headquartered or have major operations in and around Birmingham, including:

Birmingham is steeped in history
You need only look at the architecture and landscapes as you walk through the city or visit the outskirts to get an idea of Birmingham’s heritage; it’s more than just the home of the Peaky Blinders!
From the canals that were once the lifeblood of UK industry to Birmingham’s grand Victorian buildings and Tudor manors, there is plenty of history to explore within the city limits.
Take a short journey outside the city and you’ll find even more to see throughout the West Midlands, like the Black Country Living Museum, Warwick Castle, and Stratford-Upon-Avon – Shakespeare’s beloved town.

Birmingham is a multicultural city with plenty to see and do
Just like the history of the city, walk the streets of Birmingham and you’ll see how culturally diverse it is. As the canals of Birmingham were once the lifeblood of British industry, culture is the lifeblood of modern Birmingham.
From restaurants serving dishes from all over the world to multicultural events, exhibitions, and festivals, there is a huge variety of cultural exploration to do in Birmingham.
As evidence of it being a cultural destination of choice, Birmingham was chosen to host the Serendipity Arts Festival in 2025. This was the first time that South Asia’s largest arts festival has been held outside of India!
In 2025, Birmingham launched its Together on Culture initiative, a 10-year strategic framework to further cultivate Birmingham’s thriving cultural landscape.
And, of course, as a multicultural city, you’ll find plenty of cultural celebrations and festivals held throughout the year, such as the St Patrick’s Day parade, the Bangla Mela, the Vaisakhi Mela, many Caribbean and African parades and celebrations, and the Birmingham Heritage Festival.

Birmingham has plenty of green space
Despite being one of the largest cities in the UK with a densely populated urban centre, Birmingham is home to almost 600 parks. This is more than any other equivalent sized European city!
Sutton Park, for example, is one of the largest urban parks in all of Europe. It is also a National Nature Reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Birmingham is more affordable than London
The cost of living in Birmingham is significantly lower than the cost of living in London.
According to Numbeo, one of the largest cost-of-living databases, the overall cost of living in Birmingham is nearly 20% lower than London when rent prices aren’t included. With rent prices considered, Birmingham is over 30% cheaper than London.
Rent in Birmingham is around half the cost of most equivalent properties in London. Birmingham is also more affordable than London in most other metrics too, including transportation, groceries, childcare, and restaurant prices.
